Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital is seeking to recruit a qualified and experienced Orthopaedic Surgeon to join its multidisciplinary clinical team.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Medical Superintendent, the Orthopaedic Surgeon will be responsible for:
- Diagnose and manage acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions
- Perform elective and emergency orthopaedic surgeries
- Manage trauma and orthopaedic emergencies
- Provide inpatient and outpatient orthopaedic care
- Participate in clinical audits, teaching, and continuous quality improvement
- Work collaboratively with other specialists, nurses, and allied health professionals
- Ensure adherence to hospital policies, patient safety, and ethical standards
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB)
- Master of Medicine (MMed) in Orthopaedic Surgery or equivalent
- Registered and licensed by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC)
- Valid Annual Practising Licence
- At least 3–5 years post-specialization experience (added advantage)
- Training in trauma care and emergency orthopaedics is an added advantage
- Strong communication, teamwork, and decision-making skills
Core Competencies
- Musculoskeletal Assessment: Ability to perform comprehensive history and physical examinations, including gait analysis, and to order appropriate imaging (X-ray, CT, MRI) for diagnosis.
- Trauma Management: Definitive care for fractures and dislocations, including open and closed reduction, internal fixation, and application of casts/traction.
- Musculoskeletal Infection & Sepsis: Expertise in diagnosing and treating bone and joint infections
- Elective Procedures: Competence in basic reconstructive surgeries, including arthroplasty (hip/knee) and soft tissue reconstruction.
- Subspecialty Areas: Understanding and exposure to pediatric orthopedics, spine surgery, hand and upper limb surgery, and tumor/sepsis management.
- Emergency Care: Proficiency in Acute Trauma Care, Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), and managing polytrauma patients.
- Patient-Centered Care: Delivering care with empathy, respect, and high ethical standards, tailored to the patient’s needs and context.
- Communication: Effective communication with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams, including breaking bad news.
- Mentorship & Leadership: Contributing to team-based care, supervising junior staff, and leading in trauma prevention.
