World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2025: A Major Milestone for Antibiotic Stewardship

As the world marks World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (18th–24th November 2025), Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital proudly highlights a significant achievement in the fight against antimicrobial resistance: the launch of the Empiric Antibiotic Guidelines on 12th November 2025.

This year’s WAAW theme reinforces a global call to action “Antimicrobials: Handle with Care.” Our newly launched guidelines reflect our commitment to this mission.

Launch of the Empiric Antibiotic Guidelines

The Empiric Antibiotic Guidelines provide clear, evidence-based recommendations for treating common infections, aligned with local resistance patterns and national standards.
The guidelines aim to:

  • Standardize care across hospital departments
  • Support clinicians in selecting the most appropriate antibiotics
  • Reduce misuse and overuse of antimicrobial agents
  • Strengthen antimicrobial stewardship initiatives
  • Improve patient outcomes while minimizing the risk of resistance

This publication marks a transformative step toward safer, more effective clinical practice within Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital and the wider Nairobi healthcare system.

Our Commitment During WAAW 2025

During WAAW, the hospital is intensifying efforts to:

  • Raise awareness about the dangers of improper antibiotic use
  • Promote responsible prescribing among healthcare workers
  • Educate patients and communities on the importance of adherence
  • Reinforce infection prevention and control measures
  • Support full implementation of the newly launched guidelines

Looking Ahead

The introduction of the Empiric Antibiotic Guidelines is a landmark achievement, but it is only the beginning. Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital remains committed to leading the fight against antimicrobial resistance through continuous training, monitoring, and community engagement.

Together, we can preserve the power of antibiotics for future generations.
